ICANN Creates Plan for Increased Web Security and Reliability

ICANN announced a plan yesterday that will create programs to enhance the security and reliability of the Internet. However, none of the planned initiatives will augment the organisation’s power.

Called the ICANN Plan for Enhancing Internet Security, Stability and Resiliency, it will tackle:

  • Improving root zone management through automation; improve authentication of communications with TLD managers and support implementation of DNS Security Extensions (DNSSec)
  • Ensure the maturation of the gTLD registry continuity plan and test the data escrow system
  • Build on the collaborative efforts of the Internet security community efforts to effectively respond to malicious abuses of the Domain Name System (DNS).

The plan is open to comment for the next 30 days and at the upcoming Sydney International Meeting. The full version can be downloaded here (PDF).
