AuDA, the regulator of Australia’s .au ccTLD, is seeking public comment on a proposal to release two new second-level domains: .event.au and .blog.au.
Currently, only Australians are allowed to register .au domains and this would continue to be the case with the two new extensions. Derek Whitehead, chairman of the AuDA’s New 2LDs Advisory Panel, stated:
The Panel’s focus is on whether the creation of a new 2LD is in the public interest. The Panel is very keen to know what people think about new 2LDs and whether they would improve the Australian domain name system.
I think it’s great that Australia is actively trying to improve its domain space, but I honestly don’t see a need for either of the two LDs. Many blogs are already doing just fine on the .com.au extension and I don’t think demand for a .event.au would be very high.
