GreatDomains Auction Coming

Sedo’s GreatDomains is scheduled to hold on an online auction May 21 at 12:00 PM EST. But are the domains really that great?

Dubbing itself the “marketplace for the world’s finest domain names,” GreatDomains was founded in 1994. The company was sold to Verisign in 2000, barely made it through the dot-com bust, and was picked up by Sedo in 2007.

The site only sells “premium” domain names. Domains listed must be generic, short, easy to spell and remember, and be product-related. In addition, the language of the name must match the TLD, contain no trademarked keywords, and have a reasonable reserve price.

Some of the most promising offerings are:
visitnyc.com
rebellious.com
cd.net

I expect visitnyc.com will sell for a decent price. GoNYC.com sold last year for £25,783 ($40,000 USD) on Afternic.

Cd.net will be a hot commodity as well. In 2008, ok.net, pw.net, and jp.net all sold for £16,114 ($25,000 USD).

Rebellious.com sold on Sedo for £2321 ($3,601 USD) in March.

But some of the other names are not so great. Do imailed.com, gom.net, 5i.net, and expletives.net seem that premium? While some may certainly hold value, I think the “premium” designation should be held to a higher standard. It is probably the most over-used word in the domain industry.

If I were in the market for one of the “world’s finest domains,” I would not use GreatDomains. Better domains can be found elsewhere.
