Rwanda Looks to Reduce Costs with National Data Center

In an effort to reduce costs, Rwanda will build what it’s calling the National Data Center (NDC) at a cost of at least £3.4 million. The data center will help centralize all of the African country’s IT resources and various other services for the government, including communications, human resources, and payroll.

NDC is part of Rwanda’s National Information and Telecommunication Infrastructure plan, or NICI. Coromatics, a Swedish contractor, will build the facility.

All the infrastructure should be in place by 2012. Part of the plan includes laying fiber optic cable to form a backbone for the country’s Internet. This will increase bandwidth to 5000 megabytes per second. Rwanda’s goal is to lessen the digital divide and make itself a technology leader in Africa.
