There comes a time when owners of large sites find their shared hosting account no longer meets their needs. They may be running out of bandwidth, disk space, or the site might be something like a forum or blog that uses a lot of server resources. When this happens, webmasters are usually encouraged to move to a dedicated server.
The problem is, dedicated hosting is expensive. Even a low end server can run as much as £100 per month. Your site might need a more powerful hosting solution, but not be large enough to justify the horsepower and cost of a server.
Virtual Private Servers (VPS) were created to solve this issue. A VPS has all the features of a server, but costs much less. Generally, a hosting provider will take a server and using virtualization software, split it into 4-8 virtual servers. Each of these private servers can run its own operating system, reboot without affecting the others, and will usually have a set amount of RAM, hard drive, and CPU allocated to it. If you’re hitting the ceiling at your current shared host but not ready to go dedicated, consider a VPS.
