These days, however, almost anyone in any occupation is a “professional.” So just who can register a .pro domain?

Originally, only engineers, doctors, lawyers and accountants in the United States, UK, Germany, France and Canada could register the names. The registration restrictions have loosened a bit since 2008.

Now any licensed professional in any country qualifies for a .pro domain. There are more than 41,500 .pro names in use. Some 42% of these belong to American registrants. The fee for a .pro is $99 USD at most registrars.

One, two, and three character .pro domains to become available https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/377/one-two-and-three-character-pro-domains-to-become-available/ Tue, 11 Aug 2009 22:18:35 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/377/one-two-and-three-character-pro-domains-to-become-available/ .pro logoIn the past, it was impossible to register a .pro domain under four characters in length. However, a recent agreement between ICANN and RegistryPro, the operator of the .pro extension, means that these names will soon be available to register.

It is usually not possible to register domains under three or four characters. Some TLDs allow this, but most keep them off-limits or auction them off for high prices. Considering RegistryPro sponsored the 35th ICANN Meeting, the location where the agreement was hatched out, is it any surprise that ICANN approved it?

According to Catherine Sigmar, general manager at RegistryPro:

We’ve received over 4,000 emails about 1-, 2- and 3-character .PRO names. Two names in particular have generated over 500 emails on their own. This contract amendment allows RegistryPro to answer this tremendous demand in the coming months.

The .pro extension was introduced in 2004 and is only available to lawyers, accountants, engineers, and doctors. What two names could generate so much buzz? My money is on law.pro and md.pro. CPA.pro and eng.pro are probably generating quite a bit of interest, too. Either way, I’m just hoping to get my hands on sex.pro.

ICANN Meeting Sponsored by .Pro https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/70/icann-meeting-sponsored-by-pro/ Tue, 19 May 2009 21:54:53 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/70/icann-meeting-sponsored-by-pro/
In a press release made earlier today, RegistryPro announced it would be the sponsor of the 35th ICANN International Meeting.

RegistryPro is the official registry for .pro, a TLD aimed at professionals. The meeting, which is designed to promote public participation in ICANN, will be held June 21-26 in Sydney.

We’re excited and proud to support the 35th ICANN International Meeting,” said Catherine Sigmar, general manager of RegistryPro. “ICANN public meetings attract many of the best minds and influential companies in the Internet community in an energetic public forum. As one of the fastest growing gTLDs in the industry, meeting sponsorship is a chance for us to connect with our core customers, accredited registrars, and those in the industry who may not have discovered the rich landscape of .PRO.

Dot-pro is also running a contest for the best .pro website. Submissions are due by the end of the month. The winning site owner will receive…. nothing, unless you count a “Best of .Pro” logo and mention in a press release as a real prize.
