UsedAirplanes.com CEO Mark J Horne announced today that his company has bought Flying.com for a solid $1.1 million USD. Regarding the sale, he stated:

Owning a domain name of this caliber will allow us to expand our talents deeper in the aviation business and build upon the success of UsedAirplanes.com. The word “flying” is known and understood by virtually every person and the word is used in every area within the aviation industry. In addition, Google, Yahoo and Bing process approximately 20 million search queries for the word “flying” every month.

Domain sales like this often go unnoticed because they are done in private between two companies. In this case, the domain industry was at the mercy of Used Airplanes, Inc. to come forward with information about the sale.

The domain will be used to create a social media site for the aviation community. The website will also be the first to be developed from the group-up with compatibility for the Apple iPad in mind.

In addition, pilot.com.com has sold for $300,000 USD. The identity of the buyer has not been released. It’s not at all uncommon for a company to acquire multiple premium names at once, so maybe Used Airplanes had a hand in this sale as well?

GolfClubs.com sells for six figures https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/659/golfclubscom-sells-for-six-figures/ Tue, 10 Nov 2009 19:59:16 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/659/golfclubscom-sells-for-six-figures/ golf clubs
Golfclubs.com sold in a private sale this week for six figures. Unfortunately, the exact price has not been disclosed. This is not uncommon in large sales.

Either way, it is still the most valuable golf domain ever sold. For reference, GolfClubs.net sold in 2007 for $30,000 USD. The price of GolfClubs.com could have easily been ten times that of the .net.

Other recent sales aren’t nearly as impressive:

SonographySchools.com- $12,000.00
singlesplace.com- $7,500.00
esmeralda.com- $7,370.00
ificould.com- $6,600.00
hotelauskunft.com- $6,188.00
hatamoto.com- $5,888.00

Sonographry has applications outside the ocean. In medical science, ultrasonographry is used to view body tissue and also unborn babies in the womb.

Exterminator.com sells for $600,000 https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/579/exterminatorcom-sells-for-600000/ Thu, 15 Oct 2009 16:50:37 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/579/exterminatorcom-sells-for-600000/ insects
An unreported deal up until now, Exterminator.com sold in a private sale for £369,871, or $600,000 USD. The buyer remains unknown.

Country-code domains have been doing very well as of late. Antivirus.es sold for $63,325 in a private sale, while Blackjack.eu reached $45,000 in an online auction.

Most interestingly, patiofurniture.net, which was originally bought in 2006 for a measly $2,411, sold for $30,000! This is highly unusual for a two-word .net. I’m sure the seller was laughing all the way to the bank.

Software.com sells for unknown amount https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/570/softwarecom-sells-for-unknown-amount/ Tue, 13 Oct 2009 18:48:05 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/570/softwarecom-sells-for-unknown-amount/ binary
An anonymous buyer has picked up Software.com from domainer Mike Mann for an unknown amount. The name originally sold in 2005 for $3.2 million USD.

Given the 2005 sale price, my guess is the domain sold for at least $4 million– probably much more. A more accurate figure is probably $5-$6 million. It is highly unlikely that the price was anywhere near Insure.com’s $16 million, however.

Regardless of the sale price, Software.com is an excellent domain investment.

Ticket.com sells for $1.525 million https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/561/ticketcom-sells-for-1525-million/ Thu, 08 Oct 2009 22:24:06 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/561/ticketcom-sells-for-1525-million/ ticket
Word just came in a few hours ago that Ticket.com has sold for a whopping £949,683, or $1.525 million USD. This is the fifth-highest domain sale so far this year.

The actual sale occurred privately earlier this week, but wasn’t announced until today. The buyer has not been revealed.

This was a good buy in my opinion because there are a number of high-demand markets where the domain would fit in. It would be a great name for an airline tickets site, concert tickets, or even ticket attorneys.

RSS.com bought for $137,500 https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/540/rsscom-bought-for-137500/ Fri, 02 Oct 2009 15:01:57 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/539/rsscom-bought-for-137500/ rssDomainer Ron Sheridan bought RSS.com for £86,745 ($137,500 USD) this week in a private sale. Given the original asking price was $750,000, I think he got a fairly good deal.

Sheridan, in conjunction with a partner, has plans to develop the name. Currently the exact nature of the site is being kept under wraps. He said:

In the end RSS.com will be what I refer to as a logical build out for a high value premium generic domain. Our hope is that the property/brand will dominate it’s respective category.

As I mentioned, Sheridan got a great deal on the name. The problem with technology domains, however, is that their value is based solely on their popularity of that piece of technology. RSS is very popular now, but what if a new standard for news syndication is launched two years from now?

AreaRugs.com sells for $405,000 https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/515/arearugscom-sells-for-405000/ Thu, 24 Sep 2009 13:09:53 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/515/arearugscom-sells-for-405000/ rug seller
A group of investors just bought AreaRugs.com for a whopping £249,423 ($405,000 USD). They will use the domain to create an online store specializing in– you guessed it– area rugs.

Justifying the purchase, Lee Weber, Head of Marketing at the newly created AreaRugs.com, Inc said:

It is very rare to have the opportunity to buy a premium ‘.com’ domain name in a proven online consumer category. In economic times like this you have to think outside the box for ways to get the most out of money and our investors feel that we should have no problem getting a decent, if not exceptional, return out of this investment.

Given not only the current economic situation, but also the tough housing market, AreaRugs.com is taking quite a gamble. In my opinion the name is worth far less than $405,000. The seller is lucky he found an end-user willing to pay so much for it.

Christian.com sells for $600,000 https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/457/christiancom-sells-for-600000/ Mon, 07 Sep 2009 01:43:17 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/457/christiancom-sells-for-600000/ christian
First there was Rosary.com for £48,388, then Jesus.net for £73,442. Now Christian.com has sold for a whopping £366,100 ($600,000 USD) in a private sale.

This summer has truly been an active one for Christian domains. As you can see, the sale of Christian.com far surpasses all other previous religion domain sales.

That being said, I think the name is worth considerably more. There are more than 1 billion Christians worldwide, so the domain has the potential to attract a very wide audience. I’ll leave it up to the theologians and porn stars to debate whether it has a larger market than sex.com, though.

World's oldest domain name sold https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/428/worlds-oldest-domain-name-sold/ Thu, 27 Aug 2009 13:18:58 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/428/worlds-oldest-domain-name-sold/ symbolics logoRegistered on March 15, 1985, Symbolics.com is the first domain name ever registered. Less than a year away from its 25th anniversary, the original owner decided to sell it to XF Investments, a domain investment company.

Aron Meystedt, CEO of XF, said:

We are extremely excited to own the Symbolics.com domain name. Since our core business is Internet investments, we really pursued the purchase of the original domain name, Symbolics.com. For us to own the first domain is very special to our company, and we feel blessed for having the ability to obtain this unique property.

The sale price was not disclosed. XF intends to make use of the name next year to celebrate the 25 years of domain registrations that have occurred since Symbolics.com was first registered in 1985.

The original Symbolics designed and sold Lisp machines for programmers. These computers were some of the very first workstations ever sold. While the Internet is often viewed as something new and unknown, it’s easy to forget how old it really is.
