The majority of the Internet’s 13.6 million .de domains were unavailable from between 1:30pm and 2:50pm German time yesterday. DENIC, the .de operator, reports that the names went “kaputt” after empty zone files were accidentally uploaded to the DNS root system.

Information on the number of names affected varies. According to one source, every .de name starting with the letters “a” through “0” saw downtime. DENIC is still investigating the outage.

Aethiopien.de sells for €17,850 https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/795/aethiopiende-sells-for-e17850/ Fri, 18 Dec 2009 14:28:25 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/795/aethiopiende-sells-for-e17850/ ethiopia
In keeping with the recent strong performance of the .de ccTLD, Aethiopien.de sold at auction for €17,850. The name is a Latin-character version of Äthiopien, the German name for Ethiopia. It would be interesting to see how much the IDN variant of the name might sell for at auction compared to this domain.

Other recent sales include:

u.to- $13,000 USD
superrealtors.com- $5,250 USD
lmj.com- €3,103
auto-shop.com- $2,888 USD
dominationphonesex.com- $1,100 USD

As far as the domain business is concerned, the holiday season is pretty slow. Six and seven-figure domains tend to be very expensive gifts.

.eu IDNs launch https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/767/eu-idns-launch/ Thu, 10 Dec 2009 20:31:51 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/767/eu-idns-launch/ fireworks
Today is a big day for Europeans with the availability of .eu IDNs. Interestingly, so far most of the names registered are German.

Here is a list of the first ten IDNs registered. All of them are in German and contain umlauts.

1. ärzte.eu (doctors)
2. börse.eu (stock exchange)
3. flüge.eu (flights)
4. bücher.eu (books)
5. ferienhäuser.eu (vacation homes)
6. reisebüro.eu (travel agency)
7. büro.eu (office)
8. küche.eu (kitchen)
9. müller.eu (miller, also a last name)
10. öl.eu (oil)

A lot of the premium names have already been picked up and will be auctioned in the comings weeks.

It will be interesting to see how IDNS stack up against identical names without special characters. Misspellings like ol.eu (öl) and fluge.eu (flüge) have been registered for years. I think speakers of languages that use non-Latin characters have gotten used to altering their spelling for the web, after all.

Tisch.com sells for €20,000 https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/587/tischcom-sells-for-e20000/ Mon, 19 Oct 2009 04:58:43 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/587/tischcom-sells-for-e20000/ table
Tisch.com sold a few days ago for €20,000 (£18,217 or $29,696 USD) in an online auction. “Tisch” is German for “table.”

Other recent sales:

easywifi.com- $6,000 USD
stealestate.com- $1,000 USD
daha.com- $4,500 USD
tamburrino.com- $2,500USD
smmu.com – $1,500 USD

SMMU stands for Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, China, while Tamburrino is an Italian surname. I’ve always thought that first and last names make great registrations for investment. In the short term you might not see much ROI, but if you wait long enough you’re bound to find a family or individual desperate to get their hands on the domain.

Steffi Graf wins domain dispute https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/583/steffi-graf-wins-domain-dispute/ Fri, 16 Oct 2009 14:09:16 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/583/steffi-graf-wins-domain-dispute/ steffi graf
German world tennis champion Steffi Graf found herself fighting in a different sort of court recently– the National Arbitration Forum. SGF License, LLC, a company that has exclusive rights to Graf’s name, submitted a complaint that the domain steffigraf.info was confusingly similar to the athlete’s name and used in bad faith.

The domain registrant did not respond to the complaint (this is becoming more and more common) and the name was transferred to SGF License. It’s hard to lose a case when the other party doesn’t put up a fight.

Shopping.de sells for $2.85 million https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/467/shoppingde-sells-for-285-million/ Wed, 09 Sep 2009 02:24:56 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/467/shoppingde-sells-for-285-million/ shopping
Some people like shopping, others don’t. Apparently German web company Unister GmbH does, however, because it just bought shopping.de for a whopping £1.72 million, or $2.85 million USD.

Unister owns a number of other premium domains, including news.de and auto.de. It must have wanted shopping.de very badly, because while it is a very excellent name, I think the sale price was too high. “Shopping” is not a German word and does not fit the .de extension.

The domain will become the home of one of the largest online stores in Germany. Similar to Amazon.com, it will sell all sorts of products, including perfume, electronics, kitchen items, and toys.

New gTLD proposed for Bavaria https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/446/new-gtld-proposed-for-bavaria/ Wed, 02 Sep 2009 21:32:44 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/446/new-gtld-proposed-for-bavaria/ bavaria mountains
Germans will always consider themselves German, but Germany is a land of many different groups with stiff cultural loyalty. One region, Bavaria, wants to further express its unique identity by applying for a gTLD— .bayern.

“Bayern” translates literally to “Bavaria,” a state in southern Germany that was one of the last to join the country in 1867. It is one of a number of other German states and cities with plans to apply for a gTLD, including Berlin.

I think if accepted, .bayern would be see quite a bit of use. Germany has a very high number of Internet connections per capita, and .de is currently the most-used ccTLD.

Germany's .de gains position of top ccTLD https://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/411/germanys-de-gains-position-of-top-cctld/ Thu, 20 Aug 2009 02:23:32 +0000 http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/411/germanys-de-gains-position-of-top-cctld/ germany fireworks
Germany is not only the most populous country in Europe, but is now the operator of the Internet’s most popular ccTLD with more than 13 million registrations on its .de domain.

For years Germany held the number one spot, but recently lost its position to China’s .cn extension, which experienced a huge spike in registrations after the government discounted its price to only 1 yuan per year.

Now the discount program has been discontinued, and .cn registrations are dipping– from 14,082,553 in February to 12,545,589 at the end of July. This decrease mainly consists of domainers who took advantage of the low cost a year ago, but chose not to renew their names at the higher rate this year.
