DNS service

Google announced this week that it is now offering free public DNS. The service is designed is to replace the DNS servers set up by ISPs for their end users.

In simplest terms, DNS converts domain names into resolvable IP addresses. Google claims its service is faster than anything provided by an ISP. The Mountain View company also says it is more secure and protects against DDoS attacks. It can also cache pages for faster browsing.

I plan on trying out Google DNS later today, but I’m sure privacy advocates will be concerned about the new service. As a DNS provider, Big G does have the ability to log all sites visited by users. Whether or not it will and what it does with any data collected is an entirely different question, however.
