Dot Indigi- A TLD for Indigenous Tribes

The New Zealand Māori Internet Society (NZMIS) is spearheading a movement to create a new .indigi domain for all the indigenous tribes of the world. It will also request TLDs for translations of the word and will let tribes have their own subdomains under the TLD (tribe.indigi).

The goal of .indigi is to help indigenous peoples preserve their culture in this new age of the web, but also to help them exercise their rights online. Rather than have each tribe register their own separate TLD, Dot Indigi was envisioned as a way to reduce the cost and paperwork associated with approving a new domain.

Starting in the second quarter of 2009, NZMIS will be able to file an application for the new domain extension. The group contends that if countries can have their own TLDS and suffixes like .pro and .museum are being approved, then why should there not be a .indigi?
