What is on your web host's servers?

Your web host might have the right features for the right price, but before putting your bart in the door at any provider, make sure you know what sort of sites it allows and disallows.

Many hosts, for instance, ban proxies. These sites take up a large amount of resources and can cause stability issues. Other things prohibited at most hosting providers include IRC, pornography, file storage, spamming, and using the service as a download server.

Your website might be squeaky-clean, but in a shared hosting environment, its performance will be affected by other users. A host that allows any of the above on its servers may not be the best choice.

Customers of California’s Triple Fiber Network experienced a worst-case scenario when the FTC unplugged all of its servers from the Internet after discovering the company was playing host to a number of spammers and scammers. Some 15,000 websites went down as a result. No doubt most of them did nothing wrong.

To find out what your web host prohibits, simply read through the terms of service or email and ask. By making sure your host is reputable ahead of time, you will reduce the likelihood of problems later.
