Is the media jumping to conclusions about ICANN's future?

At the Sydney ICANN meeting this week, new CEO Rod Beckstrom faced a number of tough questions about the future of the Internet.

Discussing the future of ICANN governance, he stated he did not have a “fixed form opinion,” but that he was “optimistic” that a resolution would go through.

That is all well and good, but some media outlets are now claiming this as a victory for international ICANN activists, those who want to see more input from the rest of the world in the organization. I think anyone who says Beckstrom is willing to give up American control is wrong.

The former U.S. cybersecurity chief has made no definitive statements about the issue. My guess is we will see some sort of new structure that gives the rest of the world more involvement, but the United States will still dominate any sort of new system that’s formed. Beckstrom won’t give up American control of the organization very easily.
