Susan Boyle literally became a star overnight last month with her performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” on Britain’s Got Talent.
After her debut, Boyle became an Internet sensation. Hundreds of thousands watched her on YouTube. “Susan Boyle” was the second most-searched term in April, bested only by “swine flu.”
Numerous fan sites devoted to the singer have been created by enterprising webmasters. The most popular Susan Boyle website, however, has nothing to do with the Briton.
Meet Susan K. Boyle. A studio artist living in Texas, she registered susanboyle.com in 2002 as a place to showcase and sell her works. Since the April 11 airing of Britain’s Got Talent, her site has been bludgeoned with hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Meanwhile, Susan K has received numerous phone and email offers to buy the domain. Discussing one offer, she said:
One guy, within a minute, had increased his offer from $100 to $500,000. I’m not sure how serious he was, but that sort of thing is very strange to happen to someone like me.
The name is currently listed on Sedo. Susan’s asking price is currently £15,670 ($25,000 USD). The name’s selling price will naturally be a product of the British Boyle’s success, however. “The value of the domain name really depends on the sustainability of Susan Boyle’s popularity,” said Nora Nanayakkara of Sedo.
Susan K has yet to sell any art as a result of the traffic blitz.
