MSB.se sells for $141,550

A Swedish government agency, the Myndigheten för Samhällsskydd och Beredskap (MSB), has purchased the domain MSB.se for 950,000 SEK ($141,550 USD).

The ccTLD’s sale is the second-highest ever on the .se extension. The number-one name is Spel.se, which garnered a price of $264,442 USD– almost double MSB.se’s cost.

While Sweden has one of the highest Internet adoption rates in the world, its .se suffix doesn’t get much attention because of the country’s relatively small population. The extension last made news in October, when a maintenance error made all of its domains unreachable for 20 minutes.

Maintenance error shuts down .se domain

13 Oct, 2009

stockholm
An error made during routine maintenance on the .se domain last night shut down all 905,000 names on the ccTLD for a period of around 20 minutes.

Though the exact cause of the outage has yet to be determined, many believe it to be the result of a typo in the registry zone files.

As far as failures go, this one is fairly serious. While the downtime was only 20 minutes, all .se domains were affected. Sweden is lucky the problem was caught and fixed so quickly. When new gTLDs come online next year, expect to hear more stories like this.

"James Bond" data center can withstand hydrogen bomb

16 Jul, 2009

In the first part of an online video series, Data Center Knowledge tours a Stockholm data center that looks just like something out of James Bond.

A former military bunker built during the Cold War for civil defense, the server room sits under hundreds of feet of bedrock and can withstand the force of a hydrogen bomb. It is owned by Bahnhof, a Swedish ISP. Inspiration for the interior design came from science fiction movies as well as James Bond.

Providing backup power for emergencies are two diesel engines- bought second hand from old German submarines. Real plants running along the walls and waterfalls provide landscaping. Floating above the facility floor, one will find a large conference room enclosed in glass.

Unfortunately, access is limited to employees only. So if you’re looking to visit the coolest data center in the world, the video will have to make do.
