Domain sale recap

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

capture

The week came to a slow close as far as domain sales are concerned. Topping all other sales over the last few days is capture.com, which captured a sum of $53,200 USD. WHIB.com and IPS.com fetched $48,600 and $37,505 respectively.

One intriguing sale that has gone largely unnoticed is Tahoo.com for $11,701. There’s no getting around it– it’s a typo domain for Yahoo.com. Just look at any computer keyboard. The “t” and “y” keys are right next to each other. The owner of the name is likely to receive a lot of traffic from misguided Yahoo users, but he could also get into a domain dispute with Yahoo.

Metal.com sells for $165,000 USD

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

metalLeading the domain sales pack this week is metal.com, which has sold for $165,000 USD. The name would be perfect for a heavy metal music website or perhaps a firm in the metal market.

Another sale of note is stockprices.com for $60,000. If developed into a decent stock quote site, I think this domain would be worth quite a bit more. It has a huge potential market of investors, but any developer will need to build something better than competing services from Google and Yahoo.

Here are some other recent sales:

furniture.co.za- $33,000
bigdaddy.com- $20,000
lookup.com- $17,500
netbingo.com- $15,000
isp.co.uk- £7,500
manilla.com- $10,000

Comtech.com sells for $60,000

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

telecom

Comtech.com sold at auction this week for $60,000 USD. A number of telecommunications and IT companies worldwide are named Comtech. Perhaps one of them bought the name?

Other recent sales of note include cashed.com for $11,000, IDN diät.eu (”diet” in German) for €3,050, and supergreen.com for $2,550. On the lower end of the spectrum, cloudscope.com fetched $750 and mp3mediaworld.net garnered a paltry $250.

Are cloudscope.com and mp3mediaworld.net really worth anything? If I were starting a new site, I would either go all-out and buy a very expensive premium name or register a new name. With a bit of creative thinking, I’m sure you could come up with something better than these names.

Apuestas.com.es sells for €39,000

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

casino

Spanish domain Apuestas.com.es sold at auction this week for €39,000, or 56,768 USD. “Apuestas” is Spanish for “bets.”

In addition, mobile software company SPB Software bought SPB.com for $65,000 USD. Other sales of note include:

Apps.net- $25,900
AirportInfo.com- $22,222
ZH.com.cn- $18,000
PoolMerchants.com- $15,000
howtown.com- $10,000

In my opinion, the winner out of this bunch is apps.net. With every competitor in the mobile business trying to release applications and the popularity of Apple’s App Store, the term “app” has become much more common. Just look at the Google Trends data.

Healthcareadministration.com sells for $10,000

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

hospital beds

Despite being more than 20 letters long, healthcareadministration.com sold for £6,255 ($10,000 USD) this week. With the current debate over government-run healthcare raging stateside, the name has quite a market.

As for the domain’s long-term value, I think there is none. Healthcare is an issue on the minds of many Americans right now, but next year they will be occupied with something else. The best domain investments will keep their value no matter what the political climate may be.

Other recent sales:

africanfashion.com- $9,000
bruze.com- $ 8,088
holidaysuperstore.com- $8,000
allwe.com- $ 7,988
renunciation.com- $7,288
Menssunglasses.com- $7,000
womensperfume.com- $6,400
fictionbook.com- $6,000

Brax.com sells for $80,000

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

eiffel tower

Do you know what brax is? Neither do I, but apparently it’s important because brax.com sold recently for $80,000 USD, or £48,789.

Those in the know will quickly tell you that brax is in fact a 19th century board game. It is also the name of several communes in France.

Farsi.com also sold for $75,000. With all the attention focused on the language lately, it’s no surprise the name netted so much.

Some other noteworthy sales include UDK.com for $40,000, hugh.com for $25,000, and thejob.com for $15,000.

Frisky.com sells for $20,000 USD, Yahoo to upgrade data center for the cloud

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales Web Infrastructure VPS & Dedicated Web Services Web servers

adult store

Frisky for a bit of domain auction action? Then you’ll want to know that frisky.com just sold for £12,124 ($20,000 USD)– a solid price for a solid adult domain. The buyer has yet to be revealed.

SatinSeduction.com also sold for $3,250. The sale of most interest to me, however, is Oomi.com for $2,100. The name is very brandable and easy to remember. Whoever bought it made a wise decision.

On the data center front, Yahoo has announced plans to upgrade an existing Taiwan facility for cloud computing. The work is scheduled to be completed to 2010 and is part of Yahoo’s new strategy to beef up its server infrastructure globally.

WorstDomains.com offers the "absolute worst domain names there are"

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

fail stamp

Couldn’t find a good deal at the Domain Name Dollar Store? Why not try WorstDomains.com, where you can “stand out from the crowd” with one of their dreadful, overpriced names.

Capitalize on prime real estate with domains like UnderneathTheRefrigerator.com ($400.00) or BoiseIduho.com for only $149.99! Want to get involved in typosquatting? Register prime misspellings like MisteryTheetire.com ($99.95), HySkewl.com ($275.00), or ChampeanshopFutball.com ($99.95).

The site stands behind its domains, claiming that if a worse one is found, it will buy back your purchase and refund the price paid. The parody even goes so far as to malign a fake competitor, TerribleDomains.com, which offers names just as bad for six-figure prices.

Domain auction results prove any time is a good time to sell domains

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

gold bar

Summer may be winding down, but any time is a good time to sell a domain. Below are some recent domain auction results for your perusal.

These aren’t six-figure sales by a long shot, but it’s important for a domainer to keep tabs on the entire industry. The average domain price is right around £1000, after all. The results listed are characteristic of most domain sales. For every £1 million .com, there are probably 10,000 no-name domains sold.

  • buygoldonline.com- $6,100
  • dogobedience.com- $2,950
  • hdtvlcd.com- $2,360
  • 4n.net- $2,050
  • videoportal.com- $2,050
  • ontractorjobs.com- $2,050
  • okyovacations.com- $1,230
  • goodfood.net- $400
  • globalsearch.net- $325
  • beefbrisket.net- $300
  • birdseed.net- $300

Buygoldonline.com might seem high at $6,100, but the price is just representative of the strong bullion market. The only reason why 4n.net sold is because it’s two letters. ICANN currently does not permit the registration of .com or .net names under 3 letters in length.

Does your domain send the right message?

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

shocked woman

Often times, the domain name is the first part of a website a person sees. It might be on a search engine results page, a bus stop advertisement, or on another website. Thus it is important to make sure it sends the right message. Look at the following domains, however, and you will see why the registrant maybe should have thought twice before clicking “Purchase.”

1. whorepresents.com
At first glance, this looks like a gift store for prostitutes when in fact the site is a a celebrity agent contact database called Who Represents.

2. democracyinaction.com
Titled DemocracyInAction, the domain could just as easily be used for an anti-government site called DemocracyInaction

Report: average .net auction price exceeds .com

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales

graph

A popular domain auction site recently released a report detailing statistics about more than 9,000 auctions in the last three months. Surprisingly, the average sale price for a .net domain came out to $1,775 USD, a wee bit higher than the average .com value of $1,768. This is a sharp decline from the $2,527 figure calculated in the last reporting period.

If .com is supposedly king, why are .net domains selling for more? The answer is quite simple: all the good generic .com names are taken. According to the report, 75% of domain sales were .coms– mostly less desirable names, however. Now that the cream of the crop has already been sold, premium .net names are becoming more desirable.

Does this mean .coms are now worth less? Such a statement could be no further from the truth. People are simply buying .nets because there are no good .coms available. Since so few are out there, .coms are now worth more than ever before.

Server.com sells for £460,830

By Daniel Foster in: Domain Sales Web Hosting VPS & Dedicated

rack server

Server.com recently sold at auction for £460,830 ($770,000 USD). Considering how cut-throat the hosting industry is, this domain could provide a huge competitive advantage to a provider.

The name is old, too, dating back to 1994. As previous discussed, this age makes it more attractive to buyers, but with this sale it was the name, not the age, that drove the bidding.

In 2007, Hosting.mobi sold for a whopping £59,946 ($101,000). Probably because of their involvement in the domain industry, hosts understand the value of a good name.
