Register a .biz domain

Introduced in 2001, .biz is a gTLD geared towards businesses. It is intended to be an alternative to .com, but so far adoption of .biz has been slow. Should you register a .biz domain?

First off, the good thing is anyone can register a .biz domain. The only requirement is that the name be used for “bona fide business or commercial use.” Homeless shelters and soup kitchens will have to look elsewhere, apparently.

Consider registering a .biz name if you are an entrepreneur or business owner and the name you want is already taken on the .com and .net gTLDs. Keep in mind that .com is still king, however, and many Internet users are still unfamiliar with .biz.

e.biz sells for $66,001

Single-character domain e.biz has sold at auction for €39,764 ($66,001 USD). While this looks like a lot at first, when compared to similar past sales, one sees how weak the .biz extension is on the market.

In 2000, for instance, Biz.com sold for $625,000 USD. Despite an increase in average domain value across the board since then and the fact that the .biz domain is only one letter, Biz.com sold for nearly 10 times as much.

Does that mean the buyer of e.biz should have looked for another name? Not at all. In my opinion, the name is strong because of its connections to e-business and short length. But overall, .biz isn’t as strong as other TLDs.

One and two letter .biz domains to go to auction

Nearly a month after a number of single-character .biz domains netted high prices at auction, a popular auction site has announced it will be offering more one and two character .biz names for sale.

They will be sold in a live on auction on October 28. The names are:

i.biz
ny.biz
ez.biz
ok.biz
hd.biz

The following will also be available as part of an extended auction: tx.biz, hi.biz, ha.biz, ur.biz, lo.biz, and kc.biz.

In my opinion, the best names in the group are i.biz, ny.biz, and tx.biz. It will be interesting to see how high these domains go once the auction begins.

e.biz rakes in $66,001 at auction

The .biz registry, in conjunction with a prominent domain auction website, auctioned off all single-letter .biz domains this week. The highest sale price of the lot belongs to e.Biz, which yielded a stunning £41,240 ($66,001 USD) after ending with 20 bids.

As far as TLDs go, .biz has never really received much attention. While relatively high compared to average domain sale prices, the .biz auction results are low compared to what one would expect to see if single-letter domains of a more popular TLD were auctioned off.
