China may re-allow individual registrations on .cn domain

CNNIC, the operator of the Chinese .cn ccTLD, has for some time placed heavy restrictions on .cn registration. In the past year, it has banned individuals from registering .cn names. It also does not allow foreign entities to register the extension and registrars cannot act as proxies for foreign companies in the registration process. This is all done to cut down on pornographic and other unwanted content.

These restrictions haven’t stopped Chinese citizens from joining the web, however. They simply register .com or other top-level extension domains. Realizing this, the CNNIC is now considering re-allowing the registration of .cn domains by individuals.

The CNNIC did not say when it would end the restriction, if it in fact does. Currently, there are 13.5 million .cn names registered.
