Contest Challenges Competitors to Create Website in 24 Hours

FullCodepressCould you create a fully functional website from scratch in 24 hours? That’s what two teams from Austria and New Zealand will be doing May 12-13 at CeBIT 09 in Syndey. Each of the two teams is allowed six members: a manager, user experience advocate, graphic designer, HTML/CSS coder, programmer, and writer.

At the start of the competition, they will be given the name of a predetermined nonprofit organization, and will have exactly one day to churn out a final product. The nonprofit will then receive the website for free.

FullCodePress is designed not push the limits of web design. Besides providing nonprofits with stunning websites, it is meant to promote web usability and the web industry as a whole.

SitePoint recently did an interview with two team competitors.

How did you find the sleep deprivation, and how did you deal with that?

It was actually a lot easier than I expected. Once you’re focussed time goes really quickly, then you get your second wind. I didn’t end up sleeping until about 7pm on the sunday night. I tried energy drinks early on, but I think I had a few too many and my tongue started hurting… I don’t reccommend that at all. Coffee and lots of laughs were the key to success.

What was the biggest hurdle for you personally, and how did you tackle this hurdle?

Not knowing the client (obviously), and not having met the other team members — we’d only had the opportunity to chat/email on a few occasions. Otherwise, I’d have to say, from a design/coding perspective, that it was somewhat frustrating trying to wrangle our “CMS of choice” to output clean, effective results efficiently. In the end, I think what got us over the line was the fact that we all really respected one another’s areas of expertise, we communicated freely, were flexible and really enjoyed working together. Would I do it again? Now that I’ve caught up on my sleep, you bet!

It’s a shame more countries aren’t participating in this great cause, but for right now, the contest is limited to Australia and New Zealand.
