Why Yelling at Your Computer Could Slow It Down

22 Jun, 2009

There comes a time when, after spending hours troubleshooting a computer problem to no avail, you just want to yell at your computer. In this crazy YouTube video, a server admin shows us that isn’t necessarily the best idea.

Using a server-powered hard drive array, he demonstrates how shouting at the drives causes them to vibrate, which in turn increases latency. In layman’s terms, yelling at a storage disk makes it slow down. The drive has to compensate for the vibration caused by the noise, resulting in a very brief slowdown.

So the next time your computer or server calls in sick, avoid yelling at it. You may be tempted to give it a nice kick, but that’s not a good idea, either.
